I was thrilled to see this video, in part because Jim Boeheim seems like a real downer during the basketball season, so it's nice to see him enjoy the simple pleasures of a gut-bombing hot dog creation. The other reason is because I once interviewed Adam Richman, and as unhealthy as his lifestyle is, I really admire his commitment to the challenge-eating genre. I often plan my road trips around where I can eat in conjunction with a great sporting event. Looks like the 'Cuse needs to go on my list.

You say "sure", and "thanks". As someone who's done some live broadcasting, I know how hard Kellogg's job at CBS is, and as someone who loves hoops to distraction, I know how cool Kellogg's job is, as well.

I knew Clark was peddling something, and that he'd be talking to several other bloggers throughout the day. Internet writers are kind of like the morning show/prime time talk circuit for sports figures these days. So we talked about that first, then shot the bull about hoops a little.

STF: Tell me about the Capital One Cup.

Clark Kellogg: I certainly will, Eric. It's a new, prestigious honor rewarding NCAA Division I athletic programs for their cumulative on-field performance across multiple men's and women's sports. It's the most comprehensive rewards program out there, because it covers 26 sports -- 13 men's sports and 13 women's sports. It will honor the program that accumulates the most points over all three sports seasons: fall, winter, and spring. One men's program and one women's program will recieve not only the Capital One Cup, but each winner will also recieve a $200,000 donation from Capital One to fund scholarships for graduate studies for student-athletes. So it rewards on-field excellence, but it also provides funding for post-graduate studies, so I think it's a phenomenal program and a win-win on many levels.

STF: The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics does something similar to this, but Stanford has won it every year but one. Will this be a little more wide-open?

CK: It'll be interesting, because there are a couple of differences. You're speaking of the Director's Cup.

STF: Right.

CK: The Capital One Cup is exclusive to DI championships. The Director's Cup is Divisions I, II, III and NAIA. The Capital One Cup distinguishes between women's and men's programs, so that's a big difference [editor's note: the Director's Cup is cumulative of all sports regardless of gender, so a school like Stanford or Texas that can afford to field more teams at a high level has a huge advantage]. Also, national championships and first-place finishes are rewarded more strongly than with any other program. The $200,000 scholarships to the two winning programs is a really prominent difference as well.

STF: When you say first-place finishes, does that mean regular-season finishes?

CK: That means national championships or a final No. 1 ranking in the official poll that governs a particular sport.

STF: Moving on to general basketball, I wondered if you've been able to keep up with what's going on out west. I know you've been doing interviews and traveling around a lot today.

CK: No! Give me an abridged update!

STF: Brigham Young basketball is going to join the West Coast Conference in basketball. There has been speculation that the league might now add a tenth member, and we've heard mention of Pacific, Denver or Seattle.

CK: Wow! I heard BYU was going independent in football, but not all that happened this morning. That's the instantaneous nature of the 24/7 news cycle! Since it's news to me, I'm going to hold off on making any judgment calls right now.

STF: What do you think about the new NCAA tourney format?

CK: I'm excited about it, Eric! Initially, I was opposed to any type of expansion when the subject was first broached. But as I heard more and more of the discussion about it, heard the NCAA's perspective on it, trying to increase the percentage of teams from the DI pool that would have a chance, that all made since. At the time, I didn't know where we would land in terms of the immediate expansion, but I think the incremental addition of three more teams and the format that's been laid out for how those teams will be involved in opening-round games sounds like it should be good.

Change is always uncomfortable. Especially when you aren't sure how it's going to play out, and you don't know until you do it. I think this is a natural, positive step as opposed to going full-blown 72, 96, or whatever the number might be in the future. But the field of 68 is intriguing, competitive and fair, and exciting for the fans and players. I think it's good.

STF: Looking at the new coaches coming into the Big East, which of those programs do you think might be able to play above .500 this season?

CK: Steve Lavin I know from working as a broadcaster, but also from his time as coach at UCLA, so I've got a pretty good feel for him. Mike Rice, I've just watched, but I was very impressed with what he was able to do at Robert Morris. Kevin Willard has a great coaching pedigree, but I don't know him or Mike Rice personally. Obviously, Steve has the most experience at that level, but it's not only going to be about who's leading the program, but also what kind of material you'll be able to put on the court that can help you succeed. That's where you have to balance your evaluation. Coaching is obviously critical, but the personnel these coaches have to put on the floor is going to dictate as much as anything where they end up in the rugged Big East.

STF: Willard might have fallen into the best situation, even though nobody knows much about him, because he still has Pope, Hazell and Robinson coming back, and now Eneil Polynice transferring in.

CK: That's exactly the point I'm making. Evaluate the personnel. Whether it's a new coach or a long-time incumbent, that's what you start looking at. Who's back, what's their chemistry, what's their health, what's their talent level. Then the leadership of the coach and leadership in the locker room are really important to help your team reach that potential and excel.

Not sure why the bug finally bit me, but it did. Flow is a Construct is not technically affiliated with STF, but plenty of hoops folks link up there, so the worlds tend to collide.

I got an email from John McCarthy, who has a mile-long list of impressive credits in DII and NAIA basketball. He invited me to check out his blog -- Small College Basketball -- and ask him any questions I had.

I thought of one right away. This summer, we've seen a couple of high-profile DI players leave big-name programs and enroll at NAIA schools. There may be others, but C.J. Henry of Kansas (who is at Southern Nazarene now) and Taylor King of Duke-then-Villanova (Concordia) have made headlines for transferring to Non-NCAA programs. I wanted to know why a player with DI skills might choose to join the NAIA rather than move one step down the NCAA ladder to a DII school.

Here is John's thought-provoking reply:

I would say that the top level of NAIA and the top level of NCAA Div. II are quite similar. I wouldn't say that there is much of an advantage either way, as I think that it comes down to the individual situation. In each case, the student-athletes may play right away, as opposed to sitting out for a year if they transferred to another Div. I school. There are some differences in the eligibility bylaws between NCAA Div. II and the NAIA, so each circumstance may be its own.

In the two cases you mentioned, both student-athletes are transferring back close to home. C.J. is going to a program who returns their two leading scorers and several others from a team to made the NAIA National Tournament last year. They are also bringing in two additional Div. I transfers, so they should be a legitimate Top 10 team nationally, from a talent standpoint. Apparently, there were scholarships available for C.J. and the others, even fairly late in the game. Not all schools would have scholarships available well into the summer.

In Taylor's case, he is not only going home, but he is going to play for one of the finest coaches at any level of college basketball, Coach Ken Ammann. They should be #1, #2 or #3 in the pre-season polls within the NAIA. This is a very good program, better than the bottom 50-100 NCAA Div. I programs. They defeated UC-Irvine last year, and had UCLA beat until the last few seconds of the game when UCLA hit a three-pointer.

Please remember that each case is an individual case, and that there are many human elements involved.

True dat. King encountered some nebulous discipline problems at 'Nova, so his situation is different from Henry's. C.J. is a talented athlete who was drafted by the Yankees in '05, but never panned out in baseball. Since returning to college hoops, he's pretty much been a walk-on (the Yanks are paying for his college) anywhere his blue-chip brother Xavier considered going, including Memphis and KU.

In both cases, this might be what makes these guys happy. When the pro dream begins to die, perhaps it makes more sense to find a less public venue near home where hoops is just a relatively minor part of the life equation.

Some of you probably saw this coming a mile away. Others might be thinking WHAT?! But fashion is in the eye of the beholder, eh? Other schools do the multicolored piping down the sides of the shorts, or around the neck, but Marquette is in whole-hog. They put strips of this stuff everywhere.

The blue version is almost as good as the gold, though I'm not 100% on board with the gold epaulettes. It takes a certain kind of balls to wear epaulettes: the kind only seen on third-world military strongmen and the King of Pop.

The home whites are a bit 'meh', but I blame that on college basketball in general. Why wear your least impressive uniforms at home? I have no idea where that rule originated. In my opinion, home team should get to choose ahead of time, and the visitor should have to take what's left.

Then there's this beauty, which would be my choice for everyday wear. Fortunately, I'm not in charge, because the true alt-unis should be saved for special occasions. The only drawback to that plan is that if you break out your special jerseys for, say, a holiday tournament, and then lose, nobody ever wants to see them again. The uniform jinx is in full effect. This may have happened in January of 2008, as evidenced by the headline for an article by the Associated Press: Louisville dominates No. 13 Marquette. Yep, they tripped the light blue fantastic in a 71-51 beatdown. Curses!

I would be remiss if I did not point out that this is a complete 180-degree turnaround for the Milwaukee-based school. Scroll to the bottom of this post, and you'll see that Marquette once sported the worst array of tanks and shorts known to college hoops.

That's my list. Compare/contrast/argue if you wish.

This post is reserved for those that we simply find to be irresistably classy, even if they are a bit staid.

The #2 Cal Golden Bears can mix-and-match their colors all day long and not end up with a bad combination. Most commonly seen are the gold with dark blue road uniforms (seen above), or the white with gold trim homies. Then again, some prefer the gold with white swooshes on the spinnaker. Another option, which I like very much, is the dark blue roadie with gold accents, which provided a real challenge when I attempted to find a decent image of it. So you get this, instead. Even Coach Montgomery can appreciate the sartorial implications.

Another long-time favorite is the classy look sported by the Arizona Wildcats. At this point, it's the only long-standing tradition of excellence left intact by the recent goings-on in Tucson. There's the elegant dark blue with red letters and white trim, the predominantly-white number that is so much better suited to a desert afternoon, even in winter, and the red, which just sort of goes RAAAHHRRR!!

Since I'm a well-known KU partisan, I'll be brief in my comments about the Jayhawk Uniform, which also comes in blue and white, though I love it when they roll out the crimson. Every once in a while, so's you know it's special.

These probably have some authentic name I know nothing about, but to me, they're the jaggedy bits. 2) The apostrophe in Hawai'i. Lord knows us mainlanders are too lazy to observe a convention we don't understa'and, so the 'Bows are just keeping it real in the 808. 3) That dark green. Green is my favorite color, and that dark version of it is awesome.

I also like the collar variations and unusual side panels on the uniforms of the Maryland Terrapins, and the mad trim on the Coppin State Eagles.

Whoa, what happened to Tuesday?

Last day off before the lad started back to school, that's what happened. Had to give him the full day on the town before the summer officially had to end.

So here's Tuesday's entry in the hoops uni top ten: the Ole Miss Rebels.

I always sucked at writing in cursive as a young man (see, this post really ties in to the "back to school" phenomenon), and even today, my signature looks like seance ghost writing, or some sort of epileptic seizure tremor.

Which makes it kind of strange that I like this uniform so much. But I dig the use of the school's nickname, the nice trim on the lettering, and the fairly unique decision to use cursive letters instead of big, bold block capitals. It fits the Old South institution somehow.

I say it's a fairly unique decision, because Notre Dame sometimes trots out a version of their uniform that says "Irish" in script. ND will throw on an alternate uniform any day of the week, so no telling when we'll see this one on the court again. Nonetheless, it deserves mention as an interesting look in the Ole Miss tradition.

#5 Cal-Irvine Anteaters

My favorite is the one that simply says "Eaters", but several variants use an interlocking UCI logo that is also smashing, and comes highly recommended by our friend Kyle Whelliston.

In a similar vein, marvel at Long Beach, who go all Snoop Dogg on us by casually proclaiming "The Beach" on the front of their uniforms. Can't wait for that Eaters vs. The Beach series this season, though it reaches its competitive zenith on the baseball diamond most often.

So, as the immortal Dogg would say, in the smoothest possible fashion, "just chiiiiill, til the next episode" of favorite unis, which will prove that cursive is actually used in the real world, just like your teacher told you.

Despite the unusual color combinations in evidence, I actually like these uniforms. Quit complaining and put on some sunglasses.

Today, we feature the #6 Southern University Jaguars.

For some reason, when I saw the bright yellow unis with light blue trim, I was crazy about them. The Jaguars also sport a light blue version with the yellow as trim. You can see that one here, modeled by Madut Bol, son of the late Manute Bol. Madut is a foot shorter than his dad, and doesn't seem to have the same shot-blocking instincts. He'll be a sophomore this season for the Jags, who haven't had a 20-win season since 1999, though they will always have their 1993 upset of Georgia Tech in the NCAA tournament to keep them warm.

One of my other examples of Ugly Beauty comes from the MEAC, or, as I think of it, the historically black ACC. It's tough to do anything palatable with green and orange, but the Florida A&M Rattlers make a "Don't Tread On Me" type of statement with their dynamite look. I appreciate a school that can take odd color combos and make them work. If you're going to fight, clash!

Finally, we hie on over to the CAA and hit the beaches of Wilmington, North Carolina with the UNCW Seahawks. It takes a strong team to look good in teal.

On Monday, we'll be back with our #5 favorite uniform, which gives a whole new meaning to West Coast cool.

With over 300 college hoops teams in DI alone, programs must do something to stand out, and quite often, that means a flashy variation on the standard look.

Today's style is exemplified by the nation's first Cinderella gone big-time, the Gonzaga Bulldogs.

Today's uniform is an alternate, but a very stylish one. It's the black Gonzaga jersey that says "ZAGS" in sort of a 70s throwback double-line font. I like it because it's unlike any uniform I've seen any other team wear in recent years, and because I'd bet that your casual, March-only basketball fan has no idea that the team from Spokane is actually nicknamed the Bulldogs, so prevalent has the Zags moniker become.

I like the short-nickname jerseys in general, so I picked out a few others that have caught my eye during this alarming fashion phase as well. First up is another school that goes by a nickname, to the point where it is known by hoops fans far and wide. In this case, it's Mizzou, the shortened state name of the University of Missouri Tigers. I'm also fond of the no-nonsense Navy home whites, which have a similar vibe, even though it's not a nickname per se (technically, yes, but there's no way you're going to fit United States Naval Academy on a wife-beater). Navy also has one of the best ever wardrobe malfunctions, from football season several years back.

Finally, a relatively new kid on the block. Marco and I have always been a fan of the whole USC-Upstate concept. The Spartans had a pretty cool uniform option this past season, with a gray jersey with green and white accents and the winning nickname UPSTATE emblazoned across the front. So as not to be confused with either USC's Trojans or Michigan State's Spartans, we assume, with a heavy dose of sarcasm. Good show, gentlemen.

Well finish out the week with our #6 uniform tomorrow, then start up again next Monday with the run up to #1.
