Welcome to this week's Dean's List, where Michael Phelps can't escape the tax man and Carmen Electra can't escape lesbian foreplay. (Video below.)
The Honor Roll
The one hand giveth; the other hand taketh away. Virginia Commonwealth University gave Jeff Capel his first head
coaching gig. In his four year tenure at VCU, Capel guided the Rams to
79 wins and a .658 winning percentage. Then he left for a
higher-profile job at Oklahoma, but VCU didn't crumble from the loss. Anthony Grant took over Capel's winning ways, and when
Grant left for Alabama after last season, Shaka Smart took over. And
Shaka seems to be doing just fine as well. VCU upset Jeff Capel's
Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday, 82-69, limiting OU guard Willie Warren to just eight points on 3-of-14 shooting. The Rams led for all but 30
seconds of the game and, as Capel said afterward, "They beat us to all of the 50-50 balls. They were the first team on the floor."
Maybe there's something to this God thing after all. Oral Roberts University beat Stanford 83-81 in the opening round of the Cancun Challenge last Wednesday. Roderick Pearson hit a game-winning shot at the buzzer, but the real stud for ORU was sophomore forward Dominique Morrison, who scored 31 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Morrison went 4-7 from downtown and scored seven of the Golden Eagles' final 11 points. ORU then went on to get crushed by Virginia in the next round of the tournament, but at least the Golden Eagles maintain an undefeated all-time record against Stanford.
Wesley
Johnson dropped 42 points and grabbed 19 rebounds in two games against
ranked opponents at Madison Square Garden last week. Now the
six-foot-seven Iowa State transfer is the break out star of the season. His story is the narrative du jour of the pre-Thanksgiving basketball.
ESPN.com's Dana O'Neil dedicates an entire article to "the unknown
talent stepping into the Big Apple spotlight and becoming an overnight
sensation." Here's a kid that no one wanted coming out of high school that now looks like the best player on the
floor against North Carolina.
Detention
The
apologies are starting to sound repetitive for Nikola Dragovic. The
UCLA forward was suspended from the team last Friday after his arrest
on charges of felony assault stemming from an incident at a concert in
Hollywood. Ironically, Dragovic was the one who reported the incident
to university police, albeit a week after it occurred, but the police
found the 21-year-old from Serbia at fault. This is the second early-season legal
transgression for the Bruins' only returning starter. Last November,
Dragovic was arrested for pushing his (former) girlfriend after she
threw all his belongings out her window, but prosocuters declined to
file charges. "It wasn't my fault!" loses a lot of credibility the
second time around.
Stan Heath has some issues, the kind that could get his University of South Florida men's basketball program in trouble with the NCAA. According to AOL Fanhouse, USF has violated "numerous NCAA rules over the past months." This, according to a former USF assistant coach, former USF players and "other school sources." So, what are these egregious NCAA violations that have coach Heath in a world of trouble? Apparently, a video and conditioning assistant provided improper transportation to a current USF player and oversaw open-gym workouts. People these days, with their modes of transportation and monitored gym work outs...
Other than Renardo Sydney's eligibility status, one of the great mysteries this college basketball season is where has Devin Ebanks gone? West Virginia's star forward missed the
Mountaineers' season opening win over Loyola (Md.) and has not been
seen at practice since. Coach Bobby Huggins has refused to elaborate on the reasons
behind Ebanks' suspension, aside from calling them "personal issues." But Andy Katz seems to think Ebanks's departure is nothing to laugh about and I'm pretty sure most West Virginia fans would agree.
Turns out, Seton Hall guard Keon Lawrence wasn't legally drunk when he drove the wrong way down the Garden State Parkway and ran headfirst into another car. According to ZagsBlog.com, "Blood tests were conducted at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital and sources said the results showed Lawrence was below the legal limit of .08. Sources said a second set of tests conducted by the New Jersey State Police also came back below the limit." Word on the street is that Lawrence will be back in Seton Hall's lineup for the Nov. 28 home game against LIU, but the question remains, if he wasn't drunk, what the hell was he? Just really confused?

Hey, found your site by accident doing a search on Google but I'll definitely be coming back. As for your post... I agree with a lot of what you're saying here but wouldn't it be just as easy to move on? I mean why mess with your quality of life if you don't have to?

Hi there guys, every man's situations have their ups and downs. We feel those of the here and now but neither see or feel those of the future
Dragovic should be arrested for wearing that sweatshirt/rejected Jackson-Pollack canvas. (and is it me or does he look like Scott Rutherford?)
This is what living in London gets me, the Carmen Electra post was "removed due to terms of use violation." Dammit!!
Wow. If that had gone any farther, Marco would have had to start up an adults-only subscription version of STF.
Google search terms that will combine Oral (Roberts) and Carmen Electra: too many to count.
Good work, Jacob.
