Let's just sit here and hold each other like we used to. We'll watch Tyler Hansbrough commercials and rock ourselves to sleep listening to the sweet sounds of Bob Knight's late night ego trip. Welcome back to the Dean's List, where happiness is a finger roll with a side of sweaty socks.
Honor Roll
Way to go Le Moyne. Okay, so your victory over Syracuse will never count as anything more than an exhibition game. Is that all we're shooting for, a place in the record books? So what if the win never shows up on your permanent record. Thanks to Christopher Johnson's six threes you beat the crosstown program that never gives you any respect. Orange guard Andy Rautins, who is from the Syracuse area, described the 82-79 Le Moyne victory best when he said: "It's embarrassing to ourselves and our fans. It wasn't luck that they won. They came out and beat us fair and square."
When he chose to play basketball for the University of Central Florida, Marcus Jordan made an agreement with the program - let me wear my father's shoes. (Not literally his father's shoes. That would be gross.) UCF officials talked to Reebok reps, the company that outfitted the Golden Knights, and Reebok reps agreed to let MJ's son don Nikes. Time passed. Jordan matriculated. Reebok reps suddenly changed their mind. Jordan refuses to budge. UCF backs its player and loses the endorsement, approximately $3 million worth of products. It's the best and worst of college basketball recruiting and shameless endorsement deals all rolled into one. When does Nike come calling?
Tim Floyd is the kind of guy who meets his friends at the Morongo Casino, which shouldn't be surprising considering his shady dealings with likes of O.J. Mayo. More admirably, the former USC coach is also the type of guy that doesn't run past fights without breaking them up. Floyd was leaving the casino, outside of Palm Desert, California, when he noticed a fight in the food court between two women. He stepped in and mediated, almost taking a chair to the head in the process. Lesson to be learned: When visiting a casino, you run the risk of taking a beating at the hands of an angry mob of women who have lost their savings and their dignity.
The big question entering the season is how good is Kentucky freshman
John Wall? The most hyped point guard in college basketball, Wall has a
whole lot of expectations to live up to. But that didn't phase the
freshman from Raleigh, North Carolina. In his first college hoops game,
a 117-52 victory over Clarion, the Kentucky point guard put on an
offensive clinic, dropping 27 points and 9 assists. Coach Cal better
get the most out of his point guard while he can. Talent like this
rarely resists the allure of NBA money.
Detention
Eligibility issues seem to be all the rage this time of year. Jerome Dyson, Lance Stephenson and John Wall have all been cleared to play, but others have not been as lucky. Minnesota junior forward Trevor Mbwake awaits the resolution of certain legal problems and is considering playing in Europe. West Virginia freshman forward Deniz Kilicli has been benched for the first 20 games for a petty amateur violation that occurred in Turkey. Even a Blue Devil fell into the trappings of college basketball. Duke guard Nolan Smith played in an unsanctioned summer league game and will be suspended two games. Tough way to start off the season.
Here's a bad way to make a good first impression in college: get caught shoplifting. Minnesota freshman forward Royce White has been suspended from the team after an incident at the Mall of the Mall of America in which he shoved a security guard who caught him with unpaid Macy's merchandise.
How many hoops will the NCAA make Renardo Sidney jump through to play this season? In hopes that their client will be cleared to play, lawyers for the Mississippi State forward showed reps from the NCAA Eligibility Center bank statements from his family's two-year stay in the Los Angeles. Sidney was academically cleared by the university but has yet to be granted permission to play by the NCAA. Really, we're checking out his parent's bank statements? This is what it has come to? Will we be checking to see if he brushes his teeth too?
