While You Were Sleeping, The Pac-10 Stumbled

de_jpgThe Pac-10 hasn't started out well. But before we get to that, let's ogle at the wondrous hair of Idaho wing Luciano de Souza. De Souza is primarily a three-point shooter, presumably because when he tries to elevate his hair gets caught in the net. Early entrant for Best Hair in the West.

Pac-10 Ugly Early
Consensus is that the Pac-10 is in a down year, and several early incidents clearly point in that direction.

--Running out for pre-game introductions, Oregon State center Roeland Schaftenaar tripped over a TV camera cord and fell flat on his face. "Not a good way to start," said coach Craig Robinson, WITBINOPBO*.

--UCLA needed a last-second shot to avoid being Le Moyne'd, and USC trailed at halftime of their exhibition against DII Cal State-Dominguez. The Bruins also found out that five-star frosh recruit Tyler Honeycutt, who started at small forward in the exhibition game, is out until early December with a stress fracture in his leg.

--On a serious and troubling note, Stanford's starting two-guard Jeremy Green was arrested on suspicion of felony domestic assault. Coach Johnny Dawkins suspended Green indefinitely. Another returning starter, F Josh Owens, has an undisclosed but apparently dangerous medical condition. The losses leave Stanford's roster with just six recruited scholarship players.

--In the league's first official game, Cal had to hold off a late charge from Murray St. Consensus among those of us watching the game was that had the game been played at a neutral site, the Bears might've lost. Cal allowed the Racers to shoot 50%, bolstering fears that the Bears' biggest weakness, their porous defense, remains a problem.

Quote of the Week!
--With swine flu spreading through the UC-Santa Barbara roster, coach Bob Williams had a thought: "I told them, 'Why don't you guys go and have a swine flu party? Everybody should just go get it and get it over with.' They weren't as keen on the idea as I was."

Webster's Defines Excellence As...
--Weber St. hit the first 13 threes they attempted in an exhibition obliteration of Colorado-Colorado Springs. Had it been a regular season game, the Wildcats would've broken the NCAA record of 11 threes without a miss. Guard Damian Lillard, last year's Big Sky frosh of the year, was 6-6 from treyland.

dorian_green.jpgBelieve the Hype
A few newcomers showed they're ready for Immediate Impact (starring Gary Busey) with big exhibition outings:

-- Colorado St. has a new go-to guy, true freshman Dorian Green. The 6'2" guard from Lawrence High in Kansas--considered the best Lawrence Lion since Danny Manning--led CSU in scoring in both of their exhibition games. Green is not only athletic and good-looking (see pic at right), he's smart: he had a 4.0 in high school. Genepool Jackpot!

-- Two key JC transfers expected to play big minutes for defending Big Sky champs Portland St. were terrific in a 108-65 exhibition slaughter of Western Oregon. Guard Melvin Jones (a 206 kid from Chief Sealth High -- represent!) had 18 points and 5 assists. Forward Phillip "Tree" Thomas had 17 points on 7-8 shooting.

-- With two outstanding transfers and a redshirt on last year's roster, UC-Santa Barbara players would "joke about how our scout team was better than our actual first team," according to guard Justin Joyner. Now one of those talented transfers, 6'5" wing Orlando Johnson, who led Loyola Marymount in scoring and boards his freshman year, is ready to play. Getting his first game action in 19 months in an exhibition last week, Johnson scored 14 points in his first 20 minutes of play, as UCSB destroyed Sonoma State 101-64.

Upset Alert:
Stanford, with just six scholarship players available, will play at San Diego Friday night at 7pm PST. The Toreros welcome back NBA prospect Brandon Johnson, one of the team's top players the year they upset UConn in the tourney. Johnson got a fifth-year of eligibility after tearing his achilles early last season. Stanford must be wary--though it has a ridiculous name, Jenny Craig Pavilion is a tough place to win.

Other Games of Interest (all times Pacific):
Idaho at Utah, Friday, 6pm.
Boise St. at Montana, Friday, 6:30pm.
Oregon State at Texas Tech, Sunday, 1pm.
TCU vs. Cal-State Northridge, Monday, 5:30 pm.

What They're Saying About STF

"Storming the Floor's Eric Angevine does the Lord's work, scouring obscure roster after obscure roster in the hopes of finding the occasional name that breaks the mold, flies in the face of convention, dares to be different, and tells all the Michaels and Stephens and Andres of the world to go eff themselves. And when he (Eric) is done, he puts them in a blog post. It's just that simple."
